How to Maintain Your Fiberglass Boat

When you have a fiberglass boat you know all of the wonderful benefits that they offer! Fiberglass boats are one of the best options to use for any of your boating needs. Whether it’s used for sport fishing or for crabbing, fiberglass boats are your go to boat, and at Dixon’s Marine we have the best fiberglass boats to offer!  However, when using our beloved boats we don’t always use them in the best weather or ocean conditions, which takes a toll on every part of the boat. At Dixon’s Marine we do offer fiberglass boat repairs for any repairs you may need, although there is still routine preventative boat maintenance you can do to help keep your boat on the high sea!

  1. After every major sea outing it’s good to do a thorough check over your boat to look for any cracks, (even the tiniest ones), check the pump, jack stands, and the hardware.
  2. Once, the boat has been examined give it a good wash and wax to ensure nothing from the ocean is left on your boat causing rotting over time. The wax will create that extra layer of protection from properties that are outside of the water, as well like the damaging effects the sun can have on paint.
  3. Lastly, it’s extremely important to use a winter cover in Mother Nature’s harsh cold months. Anything can happen when a boat isn’t properly stored for the winter; ice can have a long term damaging effect.

These are just some basic ways to help keep your boat on the sea! If you have any other questions about boat repairs or if you would like to inquire about our Dixon’s Marine boats call us toll free at 888-569-6342.

Dixon’s Marine Takes Part in the Eastern Canadian Fisheries Exposition

More than 100 exhibitors made the Eastern Canadian Fisheries Exposition on February 6-7, a memorable event, and Dixon's Marine Group was among them. Canadian fishermen enjoyed looking at our fiberglass fishing boats, and many placed an order on the spot. We appreciated the many visitors who stopped by our booth to tell tales that we enjoyed.

Mayor Pam Wood of Yarmouth welcomed everyone to the biennial event. We received two messages from our Ministers of Fisheries and Oceans, and Nova Scotia won accolades for the high quality of fish and seafood that it provides to the world. The Exposition is Canada’s longest running commercial fishing trade show, an event that we’re proud to attend. Marketing Canadian lobster to the world and safety topics were featured on the program for Friday and Saturday. Our show badge
gave us free admission to all seminars, which provided helpful information for all delegates.

Commercial Fishing Boat Construction - Angling for Quality

commercial fishing boats
Owning a boat is undoubtedly exciting. After all, a boat provides access to the water for any number of professional or recreational opportunities. From casual sailing crafts to commercial fishing boats, there are boats for any range of uses. However, what all good boats have in common is quality construction.

Boats are large vehicles, which means they have a lot of working parts. No matter how much the owner knows about boat construction, it is important to understand how all these parts fit together in order to properly maintain the boat for years to come. To do this, it is essential to understand the way welding is used in boat construction.

Since boats are so large, they have to be assembled. Many modern boats are made with metal parts, due to the durability and flexibility of these alloys. While these parts are built separately, they must be joined together. In most cases, this joining is done with welding. Welding is the process by which metal is joined together with heat.

Having quality welding is useful for the long term stability of the boat. A good marine welder will be able to work with aluminum, stainless steel and other alloys. The most common marine parts are a-frames, booms and spars, though there will be other pieces depending on the size and type of boat being made.

Best Times of Year for Crab, Lobster, and Tuna Fishing

A fisherman always wants to learn the best time to head out for a successful excursion. Lobster, crab, and tuna are all popular in Nova Scotia. Understanding when to rent a charter or head out alone will bring the best results.

Lobster Fishing
Lobster boats are always on the water off the coast of Maine. However, lobster fishing peaks two times each year; in late summer and December. Canada accounts for over half the world's lobster supply. Many people rent lobster boats in summer as well. This time is synonymous for catching soft-shell varieties.

Crab Fishing
Crabbing season is open all year around, but certain areas may have restrictions concerning the dates and times crab boats can depart. Since mating season occurs in late summer and early fall, crabs are more active and easier to catch. The best time to go crabbing on the shore is when the tide is high.

Bluefin Tuna Fishing
Canada is considered "The Tuna Capital of the World." Giant Bluefin are common catches. Usually, tuna begins showing up in mid-summer and remains until late October, so this is the most common window to see tuna boats in the area. The only unpredictable factor is the fickle fall weather.

Canada is a wonderful place to fish for lobster, crab, and tuna. Knowing when the peak seasons occur will help a fisherman enjoy a large catch. Make arrangements early to hit the water at the right time.
